The region consists of four main surfing areas, spread across Northern and Southern Mentawai.
Aptly nicknamed Wave Park due to its density of top-class surf breaks, (with 20 breaks within a 40-minute radius), Playgrounds is the region’s surfing hot spot. With breaks like Rifles, Kandui and E-bay (some of the best in the world), conditions are suited to intermediate and advanced surfers. With a great variety of surf camps and surf boat charters available, you can enjoy everything this area has to offer.
1.5 hrs South of Playgrounds via surf boat charter, this island is a left-hander’s dream. With 9 surf spots within 20 minutes of each other, and conditions suitable for all levels, North Sipora is a favourite for many visitors. You can cruise around the island on your surf boat charter, enjoying its many spots, and visit the best wave in the region, Telescopes.
With three of the Mentawai Island’s best waves, (Lances Left, Lances Right and Bintangs), South Sipora offers remarkable surf with tropical vibes. Numerous well-kept secret spots will be accessible to you via your surf boat charter. South Sipora is known for its consistency, as well as having off shore options in nearly all wind conditions.
Found in the Southern region of the Mentawais, North Pagai is best accessible via surf boat charter due to its remote location. With only one surf camp on the island, Macaronis Resort, and one of Sumatra’s best breaks, Macaronis, it’s well worth the journey. Macaronis is an intermediate to advanced break, however there are other breaks in the region that are beginner friendly.

The Mentawai Islands has a pristine ecosystem with flora and fauna that’s found nowhere else in the world. From the Mentawai langur to the Siberut macaque, the unique animals and stunning rainforests will revitalise you.
Late March to early November is the best season to surf in Mentawai, being the dry season and the southern hemisphere's Winter. With temperatures averaging 27°C, minimal rainfall and swell peaking at 12ft (~3.5m), this the most popular time to surf in Mentawai, however breaks can be a more crowded. If you travel between December and February, expect high rainfall and smaller swell, but less crowded breaks.
The Mentawai Island’s surf is mostly suited to intermediate and advanced surfers, with reefs breaks accessible by surf boat charter. The average wave size is 6ft (~1.8m), so you need to have extensive experience surfing waves of that size, as well as strong paddling skills. There are some spots that are beginner friendly, so speak to your local guide for advice about the most suitable spots.
